Abstract
Roman architecture is one of the most vibrant fields within the study of Roman art. In the past few decades, the study of Roman domestic space has changed dramatically due to new scholarly approaches. Whereas the traditional focal point of past scholarship was the Pompeian domus, for example, the field has now expanded to include Roman luxury villas, Ostian apartments, and Late Antique housing. In addition, the past two decades have witnessed a scholarly shift of focus toward understanding the ancient visitor's experience, which has led to an entirely new line of scholarship exploring space and movement within domestic areas. Such topographical studies of space have been important in providing a deeper comprehension of the relationship between viewer and architectural surroundings. Traditionally, Late Antiquity has been considered a transitional era between antiquity and the Middle Ages. This attitude, too, has been changing, with the result that Late Antiquity is increasingly being recognized and appreciated as a period of great political and social complexity. This thesis aims to discuss Late Antique domestic architecture by applying analytical formulas traditionally applied to the well-studied Roman domus, in order to examine the way that the Late Antique villa functioned according to traditional Roman assignments. It will use as case study the Villa at Piazza Armerina, with a discussion of constructed space. In particular, it will analyze hierarchical and spatial differences in the complex, and elucidate the diversity and prosperity of the Late Antique villa.
