Abstract
This thesis takes into analysis the sentiment of dissent, dissensio, in Latin literature. In particular, it focuses on the critique over the decay of the traditional Roman customs and virtuous behavior, the mos maiorum, between the 1st century B.C. and the 1st century A.D., the two centuries corresponding to the end of the Republic, with the outbreak of the political parties’ struggles, and the first century of the principate. The purpose of the research is to understand and describe what exactly such decay of morals was. In order to do so, this research focuses on two opposite literary genres, which, however, discussed the same themes and issues: historiography and satire. The correspondence of themes confirms the actual existence of specific problems affecting the society of those times. For historiography, I studied Sallust, Livy, and Tacitus. For satire, I studies Seneca, Petronius, Persius, and Juvenal. The method applied consists principally in the use of primary sources in the original language, then translated by myself with the consultation of Latin dictionaries, in order to insert numerous citations as proofs. Secondary sources provide accurate guides to read the original texts and explain the themes in relation to their various sections.
