The case of Korean comfort women: Controversies, repercussions, and methods to redress

Abstract
The comfort women is one of the topic that is often not analyzed by history books discussing the 21®’ century. This is due mostly to the Japanese government's policies to hide and destroy most evidence on the matter, in order to avoid punishment for it. However, starting from 1991, former comfort women started to talk publically about the topic and demand for moral compensation for the crimes committed by Japanese soldiers during the two World Wars. The government refused to admit its involvement in the issue and, for this reason as well as for the failures of the trials and tribunals related to the matter to propose effective resolutions aimed at solving the problem, and the social consequences of the chonggim wianbu, the matter is still unsettled and it has deeply affected the relationship between the two countries. This thesis will discuss these aspects, and the current attention and knowledge to the topic in details.
