BA Thesis, John Cabot University, Rome, Italy. 2020.https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.14490/435Thesis (B.A. in Art History)--John Cabot University, Fall 2020.This paper explores the iconography of Hell in images of The Last Judgment by looking at biblical descriptions found in the Gospels of Mark and Matthew, and the Book of Revelation. The initial research questions that were proposed are: what is ‘standard’ or consistent in images of the Last Judgment, specifically Hell; what message do these images convey to the viewers; and how are artists successful in communicating that message? This paper primarily focuses on three images of The Last Judgment from different areas of Europe during the Renaissance including Giotto’s Last Judgment in the Arena Chapel in Padua, Rogier van der Weyden’s Beaune Altarpiece, and Hans Memling’s Last Judgment triptych. Looking at the consistencies and the differences in these images, this paper will explore the way in which the subject is approached by artists depending on the work’s placement, function, and other outside influences like works by other artists or literature.iii, 33 pagesenAttribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 Internationalhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/Hell in artThe Fate of the Damned: A Look into the Representations of HellThesis
