Abstract
This thesis visually analyzes Jan van Eyck’s Ghent Altarpiece with the aim ofinvestigating what the factors of desirability of the Ghent Altarpiece were that spurred bothAdolf Hitler and Hermann Göring to seek the work as an object of personal desire duringWorld War II. The actions of these two men support an investigation into how their desireformed and motivated their actions. Through an analysis of historical precedent, Nazi history, and the personal history of these two men, three potential factors of desire became the focusof analysis: pride, aesthetic, and mysticism. The remainder of this thesis analyzes these threeconcepts as they pertain to art and applies them specifically to a consideration of the GhentAltarpiece. Thus, the discussion is led to the conclusion that it was in fact a culmination ofpride, aesthetic, and mysticism that spurred these men to seek the Ghent Altarpiece duringWWII.
