Abstract

Microfinance is an innovative tool which has spread worldwide to liberate impoverished people from poverty. In Bangladesh, Grameen bank is the most well-known due to Yunus who won the Nobel peace Prize in 2006. The thesis discusses on the extent microcredit has impacted the empowerment of women. There is no doubt that microcredit has impacted women positively, and lifting them not only out of poverty, but also increasing their socio-economic status. What has to be explored, is whether the women are partially or totally empowered. That is, if women have an increased decision-making power; if they send their children to school, or if they can lift their household out of the misery. Furthermore, it will be discussed how female empowerment has alleviated overall poverty; how it reduced bonded labour and child marriage. Microcredit has had an incredible impact on these issues, even though it is still limited and heavily criticized, it is still an effective tool to combat poverty.
