Abstract
This thesis explores the external and internal repercussions of a crisis caused by corruption, thesource of which can be either individual or social. Through an exploration of Shakespeare’sHamlet and Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment, this thesis investigates the doubt experiencedby these texts’ protagonists, Hamlet and Raskolnikov, which has been caused by their respectivesocieties being in crisis. This thesis reveals how the internal experience—the microcosm—andthe external experience—the macrocosm—are inextricably intertwined and therefore inform oneanother, and it concludes that individual choice is ultimately the determining factor in whethersalvation or corruption prevail individually as well as socially.
