Abstract
n this article, we investigate the occupational safety and health phenomenon by implementing an alternative perspective that focuses on the economic dimensions of workplace accidents. To this end, we study the empirical relationship between the average amount of compensation paid per employee (or the average working days lost due to injuries) and a set of productive system, socioeconomic and institutional controls. We implement a fixed- and random-effects model estimation over a panel of 20 Italian regions for the 2010–2019 time span. Our main findings confirm that labour skills, educational controls and the regional level of law compliance play a crucial role in explaining the phenomenon under investigation.
