Item Sustainability in the Energy Sector: A Study of Proactive and Reactive Approaches. The Case of Enel and Eni(2024) Mazzantini, Nicol; Risucci, Vito; Jell-Ojobor, MariaThis study investigates different CSR and sustainability practices, and the various benefits and limitations of first and second movers within the renewable energy market. Through exploratory interviews with sustainability experts and a comparative analysis of Enel S.p.A and Eni S.p.A, we examine the differences of developed and developing countries in implementing sustainable practices, the benefits and limitations of first and second movers, and how relationships between companies and stakeholders improve with the implementation of sustainable practices, ultimately impacting the financial performance of companies. Overall, our study shows that, even though both companies are applying different strategies, implementing CSR initiatives in the business plan generally implies an improvement in financial performance.Item Navigating the CSR Landscape: A Comparative Study of Amazon's Strategies in Developed and Emerging Markets(2024) Palmieri, Maria Alessia; Savkiv, Nazariy; Singh, Arsh Deep; Jell-Ojobor, MariaThis paper aims to examine the nature and extent of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and reporting practices of companies in developing and developed countries. Based on the findings of our comparative analysis of Amazon’s operations in India and the United States, CSR application developed from a purely ethical obligation to a core element of the business’ worldwide strategic marketing mix. However, we found a massive difference in the application of CSR in developed and developing countries. Amazon applied a voluntary CSR strategy in developed countries; indeed, in developed countries, CSR focuses more on transparency, diversity, and inclusion. On the other hand, in developing countries, Amazon’s CSR practices focus on the compliance with local regulations, and the improvement of education and healthcare. Still, in developed and developing countries, CSR enhances Amazon’s consumers’ engagement and its reputation. Overall, our study shows that MNEs must balance global CSR strategies with local adaptation, responding to varying stakeholder demands and regulatory frameworks. Integrating CSR practices in corporate strategic decision-making has become a crucial element for MNEs to be competitive.Item Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability within the Aviation Industry – The Case of Emirates and Ryanair(2024) Brena Ramirez, Sandra Carolina; Sariola, Lynch Ainsley Gonzales; Jell-Ojobor, MariaThis paper analyzes the role of CSR in dealing with social and environmental concerns within the aviation industry. The research focuses on how multinational airlines manage the complexity of integrating environmental commitments with economic goals in a sector that contributes considerably to the global emission. Through a qualitative approach based on secondary data from two leading airline companies, i.e., Emirates and Ryanair, we analyzed the MNEs’ CSR initiatives in three primary areas: environmental and social practices, environmental risks and sustainable investment, and CSR benefits to the MNEs and their stakeholders. We found that both airlines have made improvements to offset their carbon emissions. However, high investment cost, weak consumer involvement in CSR initiatives, and inconsistencies in the global regulatory frameworks limit the achievement of their sustainability goals. Additionally, stakeholder perspectives on greenwashing, as well as transparency gaps, emphasize the need for stakeholder engagement strategies and effective communication. This paper therefore details the importance of innovative technologies, global regulatory consistency, and effective stakeholder collaboration in developing sustainable CSR practices in the aviation industry.Item CSR Strategies in the O&G Industry: The Need to Focus on Local Communities in Developing and Host Countries(2024) Salzman, Michaela; Tracy, Rebekah; Beinein, Tasnem; Qasim, Zara; Brown, Kiersten; Jell-Ojobor, MariaThe oil and gas (O&G) industry faces unique challenges and opportunities in terms of corporate social responsibility (CSR), due to their operations’ direct impact on the environment. This paper analyzes the effectiveness of CSR strategies within the sector, with a focus on understanding the needs of developing host economies. Focusing also on Eni and its operations in Nigeria to apply a real-world example behind suggested theories of existing literature. Eni is seen as a pivotal case study through its investments and focus on renewable energy sources. Through a qualitative approach, this research highlights insights from expert interviews and secondary data sources. Through the findings, it is noted that while Eni has demonstrated commitments to sustainable development, including investments in different regions’ infrastructure and renewable energy projects, there are still major controversies, such as oil spills and socio-economic challenges in these host economies. A significant gap was discovered between Eni’s operations and its local community’s needs, highlighting ineffective CSR strategies. This paper therefore details the need for local engagement, standardized reporting, and long-term initiatives to benefit the socio-economic and environmental landscape to improve the firm's CSR engagement, reputation, and competitive advantage.Item Beyond Borders: Exploring Multinational Enterprises’ CSR Efforts for Health Equity in Developing Countries – The Case of Johnson & Johnson(2024) Agresti, Leonardo; Bonannella, Valeria; Moisa, Georgiana; Stabiano, Elisa; Venneri, Gabriele; Jell-Ojobor, MariaAs corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices become essential and necessary for multinational enterprises (MNEs), consumers find themselves skeptical about such commitments. As a result, MNEs must prove that their interventions are making a positive impact rather than using social responsibility initiatives as marketing strategies. A pillar of social responsibility is making healthcare accessible and affordable worldwide. In developing countries, access to healthcare is limited, and a lot of harmful diseases pose a threat to millions of people’s lives. In such contexts, the role of pharmaceutical corporations and their interventions becomes crucial. This research paper is a detailed review of Johnson & Johnson’s strategy for enhancing healthcare access in developing countries, especially Sub-Saharan Africa. This study analyzes Johnson & Johnson’s engagement in CSR efforts to enhance access to healthcare in emerging countries. Using a single case study design, we investigate the company’s investments in healthcare initiatives, infrastructure, stakeholder engagement, availability of services, and accessibility in the African region. While impressive progress has been made, areas for improvement still emerge. Ultimately, implementing CSR in the healthcare sector has shown to be a complex and sensitive issue. Necessary recommendations are made on how to amplify the outreach of corporate initiatives at a higher level to solve health disparities in developing countries.Item Investigating the Relationship between CSR Initiatives and Economic Performance: A Case Study of Tata Motors in Emerging, Developing, and Developed Countries(2024) Badillo Campuzzano, Tatiana; Fabbri, Giovanni; Russo, Carlo; Simpson, David; Jell-Ojobor, MariaThis purpose of our research is to introduce Tata Motors’ approach towards sustainability, worth analyzing due to what might be considered a disadvantageous headquarters in India. Through a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) approach, the paper investigates how emerging and developing countries can produce revolutionary and sustainable innovations whilst simultaneously improving their financial state. Through a stakeholder approach, our case study also reveals practical solutions that foster worldwide consumers’ adoption of electric vehicles, overcoming burdens such as high consumer prices and difficulty of use. Our paper provides insights that show emerging countries are not damaged by sustainable efforts, but can actually generate profits from them. Our research also covers the importance of highly competent managers inside an international firm, utilizing Tata Motors’ acquisition of Jaguar Land Rover as a representative case.
